Moving from a house one owns to a rental can be a challenge. There is no longer the stress about paying for upkeep, but living in someone else’s property often comes with new stresses regarding specific decorating rules pertaining to the hanging of art and shelves.

People want to make their abode a home with their own decorating touches.

Everyone would like to make their living spaces their own with lovely art and accessories. Landlords are weary of damage that may be made to their properties with nails in walls, and no one can blame them. Command products by 3M has come to the rescue making wonderful products that will help decorate and organize the abode with absolutely no harm to any surfaces.IMG_1710

Hang artwork and hooks easily for organizing with no tools nor destruction to any surface

Command products have reusable hooks and caddies that make decorating and organizing a pleasure. They are easy to install and remove without any harm to the walls. Command has beautiful decorative hooks, as well as simple clear hooks and wire management systems, picture hangers and poster clips, and caddies to organize the walls. They can hold works of art, robes, towels, etc and are easily removed, without marking the walls, when it is time to move on.IMG_1786 IMG_1807

Be inventive using Command;  Command hooks made the issue of attaining shelf space easy.

The kitchen sink in my new rented abode was longing for a shelf to be placed above it, between the two upper cabinets flanking either side. Problem is, the cabinetry is new and the property owner would probably not appreciate nails being placed in the new and clean decor.

By using an open metal shelf and Command hooks I easily installed a shelf myself in the niche between the two cabinets with no tools except for a tape measure, level and pencil.

  • Having a 36 inch opening, I purchased an Elfa 36 inch wide by 12 inch deep wire metal shelf form the Container Store. IMG_3913
  • Using the level and measuring tape, lines were made with a pencil to determine where to place the hooks that would hold the shelf up.
  • The metal shelf was easy to snap into place allowing for the hooks to hold it in position until the time comes for its damage free removal. IMG_4044 IMG_4062

    IMG_4058

check out the magnetic led touch lights added to the bottom of the shelf for accent lighting

  • Any pencil marks leftover were easily washed away.

I now have a beautiful place to store extra items in attractive cubbies. Two round dollar store battery operated tap LED lights with magnets attached to the bottom of the metal shelf add an accent light over the sink to finish off the new decor.

Command is very easy to apply and remove needing absolutely no tools.

  • Clean the surface first with rubbing alcohol and let dry.
  • Remove blue or red label liner on the tape to attach to hook so that the tab in easily accessible on bottom for future removal.
  •  Then remove the black labeled liner on adhesive and attach to surface.
  •  Press firmly for 30 seconds and wait 1 hour before use.

Ready to move on to a new abode, then simply take the shelf off of the hooks and then remove the Command hooks.

  • For easy removal simply hold the hook while you pull the tab straight down. Keep pulling until hook is released from the wall (Be prepared to pull the strip as much as 6 inches in order for it to liberate the hook).

Hanging artwork and anything on the walls can be tricky. everything must be hung level, straight and at the correct height. Traditional picture hangers and hooks place holes in a wall so it is necessary not to make mistakes when using these. With a rental or dorm room one might not have the option of poking holes in the walls. Command is a wonderful discovery for everyone and just about every situation. The kids can now hang the posters on the walls of their rooms without tape, thumbtacks, mess or punishment for damaging the wall’s finish.

I can attest to these products being a great invention to assist in decorating and organizing the abode. All of the Command products are easily removable and reusable; simply purchase refill strips. Command products are perfect for painted surfaces, tiled walls, wood etc. (Command states that the products should not be used on wall paper or vinyl covering).

Create a beautiful decor by thinking outside of the box using inventive products. Never be afraid to dance!

Although the sofa eyed on view in the store may be a couch of one’s dreams, more times than less, once home it will look awkward and not fit in the room as imagined. Simply by making the proper preparations by having floor plans of the room or rooms shopping for one will know the sizes needed to perfectly decorate a beautiful abode.

Avoid costly buying mistakes before heading out to the stores by making a floor plan. Untitled

Purchasing furniture purely based on appearance can be a frustrating blunder. Without a floor plan it is difficult to fully understand exactly what size furnishings will work best to create a beautiful decor, resulting in furniture being delivered that is unusable, cannot be returned due to final sale or could be costly to exchange. This is a very common and upsetting shopping mistake that people make when decorating the abode. It is easy to avoid making this common misstep when buying furniture by making sure to be totally prepared for the shopping excursion with floor plans.

A floor plan will allow one to see exactly where furniture should be placed in a room for optimal design. With a plan of action no longer will there be a letdown when the delivery of the new furnishings come only to see that they will not fit into a room or even through the door or up a staircase.

colornspice

colornspice

  • With a floor plan one will know that instead of a sofa and loveseat maybe only a sofa and a chair will work in the allotted space.
  • When purchasing a dining room table, by having a plan one will know exactly what size and shape table will fit perfectly in the room.
  • Before buying a king size bed that will not fit, with a floor plan one will know that the bedroom may only fit a queen size bed comfortably with one tall dresser instead of a long triple dresser.

Floor plans are as easy as following the lines on graph paper.

A floor plan is a scaled version of a space on paper complete with furniture and accessories. The plan begins with taking proper measurements of a room and any furnishings that are to stay in the given room.

A few simple supplies are needed to begin the journey of making a basic floor plan.

  • A tape measure
  • Pencil
  • Scrap paper
  • Graph paper

Begin with measuring.

Do a very rough drawing, on a piece of scrap paper for measuring purposes only, of your room showing walls and openings for doors, windows and fireplaces. Note where columns and built-in cabinetry are in the room as well. Take out the measuring tape and begin measuring a room writing down each measurement in the applicable space on your rough drawing. For a basic start, measure the length and width of your room.

mattswhirled

mattswhirled

One should work their way around the room and get into a measuring rhythm.

  • Beginning at one corner, measure from one corner to inside the door or window frame.
  • Then measure the door or window width.
  • Now measure from the other side of the door or window along the wall to the next door or window.
  • Measure the width of the door or window.
  • Continue measuring until the measurements on each or the room’s wall have been completely transcribed to the rough drawing.
  • Measure column widths and where they are exactly placed in the room by measuring from perpendicular walls to the column.

Draw a scaled plan using a pencil and graph paper.

Now that the measurements have been taken it is time to get to work to create a scaled plan of the room. Drawing a room to scale on plan is simple once one understands that one quarter inch square on the graph paper equals one foot, and that inches can be estimated with half a square equaling 6-inches and a fourth of a square equating to 3-inches.

allthosedetails

allthosedetails

  • Using the length and width measurements draw the basic room perimeter to scale onto the graph paper with a pencil.
  • Draw in the doors, windows, etc.  to scale on the graph paper in the same way you measured them in the room.

Now it is time to play with placing furnishings in the floor plan.

When the basic room plan is completed make a few copies and have fun designing the room for several scenarios as if playing with furniture in a dollhouse. Just as room was scaled to fit the floor plan the furniture must be placed in the room to scale as well.

Be aware that room is needed to walk around pieces or to pull out chairs; three feet is optimum but thirty-inches will work. Make sure that there is room for a door to open and that windows are not blocked.

  • Shop online for sofas, tables and bedroom set ideas; find the measurements of the pieces desired and draw them to scale on a separate piece of graph paper.
  • Cut out the scaled furnishings from the paper. Take the furniture cutouts and play with them on the floor plan until the perfect room is achieved.

    londonreidblog

    londonreidblog

  • Once the furnishings are best placed trace an outline of the furniture on the scaled copy of the floor plan and remove the paper furnishings.
  • Write the sizes of the pieces of furniture in on the plan in order to know what is required before heading to the store.

Understanding standard basic sizes of furniture can help with planning a room.

  • Sofas can range from 78-inches to 108-inches.
  • A standard sofa size is approximately 36” x 90”.
  • A standard loveseat is approximately 36” x 60”.
  • Upholstered chairs are usually around 36” x 36” give, or take.
  • Barrel and swivel chairs can be found at 30” x 30” and up.
  • Small wood frame chairs can be found as small as 24” x 24”.
  • The standard desk is 30” x 60”.

Sites like Stanley Furniture are great to find furniture for every room including the living room, dining room and bedroom as well as case goods and accents. It gives their exact dimensions and where the furnishings can be purchased locally.

Have fun making several plan options if possible. Try the basic sofa and loveseat on one plan and try a sectional or a sofa with chairs on another. Get creative by breaking up larger rooms into a couple of sitting areas. See if the dream of a chaise can become a reality on plan for the bedroom.

Extra homework is important before heading out to shop for decor.

Once the floor plans are completes extra pre-shopping preparation for the decor can be taken by perusing through favorite magazines and websites relaxing on a break or before drifting off to sleep. By browsing through magazines and online one will gather great decor inspiration. Rip out pages and print out favorite photos of dream rooms to place in a folder to make a dream file.

With a fantasy file and floor plans the perfect furnishings to complete a lovely decor can now be easily purchased without stress. Walk into a store with a goal and the tools needed to complete the mission without worry of a hard selling salesperson. Understanding the exact needs of the room puts the buyer in control of their own destiny of a beautiful abode.

Unveil the beautifully decorated rooms; never be afraid to dance!

Wine has been traditionally delivered in wooden crates that after the wine bottles are taken out of, they are broken down and tossed into the garbage or used for firewood to be turned into ashes. Instead of sending the crates into oblivion be creative and use the wine boxes to add new excitement for the decor.

Wine crates can be repurposed into new lovely furnishings to dress the abode with.

  • Wine crates are interesting in themselves printed with the wine companies names and logos, they instantly lend a country touch to the abode’s decor.
  • Attach the wine crates to the wall to float as box shelves to be used for everything from displaying books and knickknacks in a living room to dishes and glasses in the kitchen.

Having a beautifully furnished home to show off is the goal for mostly everyone. Decorating the abode can get costly so redecorating using items that you already own or acquire can be the perfect solution to obtaining a beautiful decor without breaking the budget.

Enjoy watching my fab video discussing ideas to decorate your own metal cabinet!

Metal cabinets are versatile and can be used for many applications beyond the office.

Traditionally a metal cabinet is thought of the standard filing or storage furnishing found in the office. These sturdy work horses in the furniture world can be wonderful repurposed for decor in other rooms. Decorate a metal cabinet and it will turn into a beautiful piece of furniture to be used in the bedroom, kitchen, dining room or living room.

  • Use a two draw high metal file cabinet as a night table, end table or as a base for a dining room table top.
  • A tall metal file cabinet can be used as a dresser in the bedroom with drawers that are wonderfully deep to fit all of the clothes.
  • Turn a metal storage cabinet into an armoire for the bedroom or kitchen.
  • Create a kitchen island by repurposing a metal cabinet.

The challenge of repurposing a metal cabinet for a more decorative furnishing is how to go about dressing it up for the decor.

  • Paint is the simplest solution. Use a primer so that the paint adheres to the metal, then paint using a high gloss enamel in a color to complement the decor.

    homejelly

  • Take paint one step further with a faux technique turning the metal into the look of wood or marble.
  • Use stencils to add a special touch to the metal furnishing.
  • Vinyl decals used for wall decor can also be the perfect way to transform a metal cabinet into beautiful decor.
  • Camouflage the cabinet with a collage of favorite pages from books, magazines or music pages using the decoupage method with glue and a top varnish.

No matter how large of an abode one resides in, there is always a need for furnishings to store belongings. Items that you find or may already own can be magically turned into brand new decor that will work for you and look beautiful.

Kitchens come in many styles and sizes. Not every home is blessed with a huge room designed to prepare meals, eat in and entertain, but every abode does have a kitchen sized to fit in with the home’s needs.

Have fun watching my eHow video discussing galley style kitchen designing.

Many homes have kitchens known as galley style.

These kitchen are designed for mainly the utilitarian purposes of storing supplies and preparing the meals like the galley on a boat. Designed for a small space, these kitchens are popular in Brown Stones and apartments with enough space to fit counter space and appliances running down on opposite walls facing each other.

Galley kitchens can be beautiful when designed to cater their style.

Use space wisely.

Space is at a premium in a small kitchen so use it to its best ability.

  • Add shelving above a window and doors.
  • If there is a window over a sink then bridge the upper cabinets with a shelf placed in front of the window to hold glass wear.
  • A rack can be hung from the ceiling over a stove to hang pots and pans.

Brighten up the space.

Keep the smaller space spacious with good lighting. A galley kitchen is normally long and can appear like a tunnel without the proper lighting.

  • If you do have a window then keep treatments to a minimum with a simple bling to let the light in during the day.

    augustaluxuryhomes.com

    augustaluxuryhomes.com

  • Place recessed lighting in the ceiling.
  • Add decorative pendant lights over a sink or open counter area.

    cococozy.com

    cococozy.com

Consider adding an opening in a wall t

o brighten the space.

The galley kitchen most likely backs up to the dining room or family room. Review the layout to see if it is possible to add an opening from the kitchen to another space.

  • Adding a pass-thru where the sink faces the wall can open up a galley kitchen and provide a view when working at the sink.
  • Open up a wall to widen the galley counter into the other room to provide counter seating.

    thissoldhouse.com

    thissoldhouse.com

Raise the ceiling to create space.

You probably don’t have the option to actually raise the ceiling but one can actually design the kitchen to appear tall and lean.

  • It is easy to make the room appear larger easily by just building the upper cabinetry up to the ceiling.
  • Build a floor to ceiling pantry.

Keep the color light.

Dark cabinetry will close a space in so stick to lighter tones. Add dimension with a darker counter or backsplash.

  • Do not be afraid to pick a color for a fun kitchen, such as blue, but make it in a light tone.
  • Choose a natural lighter wood such as maple or birch.

    davinong.com

Design the space that surrounds you to add comfort to your life. The abode should be a sanctuary to enjoy. Never be afraid to dance!

Shabby Chic is a popular style that promotes comfort and coziness. The problem is one should not want the connotation that their abode is shabby. For that reason I now refer to the Shabby Chic style as “Relaxed Chic”

Have fun watching my video discussing fun shabby chic decor

The original Shabby Chic style began in the large homes found on the countryside  in Great Britain.

The country houses in Europe are inviting, decorated with very comfortable furnishings. Perhaps the furniture was handed down from previous generations from their formal city homes after the pieces aged and were replaced.  These furnishings are comfy with a worn and distressed look that is inviting as if saying “sit, relax, You won’t wear me out anymore than I am already”.

Europeans evoke elegance even when shabby.

Maybe it is the accent but the British and French seem to know how to present an elegant appearance even when not attempting to be formal.

Shabby Chic furnishings present a relaxed elegance.

The relaxed decor is lovely with distressed and vintage pieces. Sofas and chairs invite you to rest as if on a fluffy bed. Furnishings range from the elegance of carved French to the simplicity of Swedish and American Shaker.

  • Oversized slip covers often cover sofas and chairs creating an inviting look.

    Art Streiber, Shabby Chic

    Art Streiber, Shabby Chic

  • Many of the furnishings embrace their aged appearance wearing their worn layers of paint proudly.
  • Colors are soft, often in white pallets or soft colors.
  • Patterns are of soft chintz fabrics with country checks, stripes and flowers.

    one kings lane

    one kings lane

  • Fabrics are vintage in appearance faded with age or new to be fashioned to appear as if aged.
  • Wooden furnishings whether actually vintage or new appear to show lives of happy living with distressed edges and worn finishes.

    tripadvisor

    tripadvisor

  • Vintage wood furnishings are often painted in lovely white or light colors of blues and yellows.
  • Weathered metal furnishing add dimension to a room.

Decorating a Relaxed Chic abode can be fun and rewarding.

Imagine yourself in a lovely house on a farm in the country with wide plank wood floors and an old fashioned wood stove. Place yourself inside the dream room that is to be decorated.

First step is to determine your colors

  • Shabby Chic often brings thoughts of white, but light colors in pastel hues work as well. Think about a linen white instead of a bright white. Soft colors such in rose, mint, yellows, greens and blues blend lovely. Even darker patterns will work when distressed into a faded look. Beautiful French toile fabrics are often used inviting scenes of the countryside in the pattern. Traditional floral patterns printed on a linen baric give the relaxed chic look that you are looking for.

You decided on the palette now it is time to determine the furniture that you will need

Obviously different rooms require different furnishings.

  • The living room is the center of the conversation. Make it beautiful with a sofa with an oversized slipcover. Create a conversation area by adding a country French carved frame armchair. Add vintage natural wooden nesting tables to use as an end table. The coffee table can be an aged metal base with a glass or wood top. Prefer the clean look of paint to weathered wood, then create a room using wooden furnishings painted in white, yellow or blue. Use a high gloss enamel for long term wear.

    designlike

    designlike

  •  A country kitchen is the ultimate relaxed chic look. Decorate with a wide planked wood farm table as the centerpiece in the heart of the home. Surround the table with painted ladder back chairs and slip covered cushioned seats. For excitement consider using vintage chairs that do not match and paint them in the same finish. Use the same fabric for cushions or upholstery to tie the furnishings together.

    decorologist

    decorologist

  • The bedroom is in the ultimate of comfort in a relaxed chic decor. Fluffy bedding takes center stage. Shades of whites in cottons, lace and crocheted create a clean and comfortable appearance. Not a fan of white then use a pretty print of roses. Use an antique iron or brass headboard to frame the bed. Add a small chair by the window to sit and read. Vintage finds can be used as bedside tables and dressers. Leave the natural beauty of the aged wood or paint the treasures for a cleaner look.

    homedesignpics

    homedesignpics

Accessories add the finishing touch to the Relaxed Chic abode

  • Bring patterns and textures in with pillows. Tapestries look beautiful on the wall and add a new dimension to the room. Area rugs should have the aged appearance that a needlepoint lends. Add lighting with delicate chandeliers and pretty lampshades.

Make this a great time to have fun discovering new finds at antique stores, thrift shops and garage sales.

Think outside of the box.

  • Buy the cheap unappealing artwork for the attractive frame then use the frames to frame mirrors or old family photos.
  • Vintage lighting fixtures can be painted.
  • Stools can double as end tables.
  • Old patchwork quilts make lovely throws for the sofa and bed.
  • Old trunks can be repurposed as tables with the added benefit of extra storage space.
  • Use the drawers from a found dresser as wall shelving and replace the drawers in the dresser with baskets.
  • An old child’s chair can be painted and used as a pedestal for a plant.

Relaxed Chic not only is an attractive and beautiful decorating style but is also an eco-friendly way to decorate the abode. By renewing vintage items one is creating a sustainable living environment. Have fun creating new decor from the old. Enjoy your relaxed and chic surroundings.
