Just about everyone knows what a LEGO brick is; the colorful block that comes in various sizes geared to get kids to use their imagination as they create. The LEGO company was started in 1932 by Ole Kirk Kristiansen, but it was in 1958 that the now famous LEGO brick was patented beginning a limitless trip to the many roads of boundless creativity using the simple bricks even into the busy technological age of today.

The first Lego bricks were developed in the 1940′s

In 1949 the first plastic LEGO Automatic Binding Brick in four colors with four and eight studs was born. Packaging created to build specific LEGO play structures came in the 1950′s and by 1958 the LEGO brick was perfected into a more stable product that is what is still being sold and used today.

LEGO fans have grown up to create home decor and furnishings out of the fun bricks.

Perhaps one of the core reasons that LEGO has survived through generations of fun is that the company continues to stay in the Kristiansen family and is now run by the founders grandchild. LEGO thrives simply by one using their mind to have fun thinking and improvising in order to use their hands to creatively invent and build unique LEGO designs and structures.

Never stop thinking and using imagination and never be afraid to dance!

The tiki bar dates back to the First World War and has continued to be popular, bringing an island party feel to the décor.

Following World War I, travel became more affordable to the masses. Taking an island getaway vacation became a popular destination and, with it, folks brought back souvenirs to adorn their own abodes. Polynesian and South Seas themes in décor, as well as food and drinks, became the rage.

“Don the Beachcomber” is known to have been the first tiki bar. It was created in Los Angeles by Ernest Gantt (known as Donn Beach) in 1933. Gantt decorated the bar with souvenirs from trips to the tropics. Upon returning from World War II, Gantt opened “Waikiki Beach” in Hawaii. The new bar was located on the beach surrounded by palm trees and adorned with authentic tiki and tropical island artifacts. The bar and furnishings were fashioned from bamboo and decorated with diving masks, spears, and carved idols.

Have an island get away in your own backyard. Bring the beach home to share with family and friends. Take pleasure in the lovely weather. Life is a party that you have an exclusive invite to so get out and enjoy, and never be afraid to dance.

The abode is a reflection of who the inhabitants are who reside within its walls. Having a perfectly complemented designed home is what one aspires to having. Unfortunately the pocket book can keep one from thinking that they can achieve the furnished abode of their dreams. With a little design knowledge, planning and fun shopping anyone can easily design their own beautiful living space.

Have fun floor planning and think outside of the box when shopping and dressing up the abode.

Floor plans are all about trial and error and balancing the room. Once the plan is in place it is time to have fun shopping for the furnishings that will become part of the family. Shopping can be a fun activity for the entire household. Let everyone add their own personal touch to the home, just make sure that everything coordinates. Keep the decor unique allowing for everything to blend together and flow gracefully.

Enjoy browsing

Do not be afraid to browse the stores as one does when shopping for a new car. Just as when purchasing any item one needs to remember to be confidant and completely happy in their purchases. Stay firm and do not let a sales person intimidate you into purchasing something that you do not like or you know will not fit in your space. This task can be intimidating and confusing when working within a budget and handed so many stores and choices.

Keep calm and turn the shopping excursion into a fun adventure. Take it slow visiting a few stores before making final decisions. Many stores will have samples of swatches of fabric and finishes available for you to bring home to help make your choices; all you need to do is ask.

Pull furnishings away from wallsba-sofas

Furniture should never be placed directly against a wall. Even in a small room a sofa pulled just a few inches away from the wall will make the room more inviting; no one wants to feel as if they are put “up against a wall” literally and figuratively.

bhg.com

bhg.com

Create an inviting environment

A larger room may become overwhelming with one seating area; do not be afraid to create a couple of seating areas in a bigger room. Design so there is a clear path to an exit without one walking directly through the sitting area. Use a desk and chair instead of a console table behind a sofa for dual purpose. Think outside of the box using items such as an interesting bench as a coffee table in a tight area. Old trunks can be fun for tables too. Ottomans with trays, instead of coffee tables, create coziness and extra seating when having guests. Mix shapes. Add a round coffee table for softness.

yourhomeonlybetter.com

Hide a play area within a designer room

Having young children in the household does not have to equate with a house looking like a daycare center. Furnishings can have multi uses creating areas for play hidden in plain sight. Add a pretty antique painted children’s rocker which can double as pretty accent. Replace an end table with a lovely wood play table and a couple of child chairs around it for craft time or homework.

Coordinating different woods can create a designer touch

If you have a set in maple buy a piece in walnut to contrast. Be aware that more than two different woods in a room can be overkill. The different woods should not appear too close in color or else it will seem like a design mistake. Do not try to buy a piece to match existing furniture finishes. It might seem like it is a match in the showroom only to see the actual wood is pine stained a cherry color when placed next to the natural cherry furnishings in the room, creating a cheapened look.

blog.purehome.com

blog.purehome.com

Designer rooms do not match, they are coordinated

When buying furniture one does not have to buy the matching sets that appear in groupings in the showroom. A sofa does not need to be identical to a loveseat, just as you do not have to always buy the pants with the matching jacket. Furnishings need to coordinate just as your fashions do. Coordinate fabrics to bring together the seating. Get the touch of a professionally designed room with pieces that are coordinate instead of matching. Purchase one end table and coffee table that match in wood, then find another end table in metal and glass. Use a durable stone coffee table in family rooms removing the threat of wet glass rings as with wood or streaking a glass top. Mix the stone with wood end tables.

Have fun hunting and creating

Shop the bargain stores, thrift shops and consignment shops for unique pieces that will work and add a designer touch to the decor without breaking the bank. Create the look of built in library or china cabinet using units from stores like IKEA. Purchase outdoor furniture after season on sale that can look beautiful used inside; for a kitchen buy a small metal bistro table with two chairs for the breakfast nook. Department store outlets have one of a kind pieces for sale that can become a beautiful bargain when recovered to coordinate with the abode’s decor. Find lovely window treatments shopping online at JC Penney’s clearance section. Target has some amazing buys on upholstered chairs in fun fabrics that look like they were purchased from a much higher end store.

Be open minded and find interesting pieces to dress up the abode with. Enjoy the design adventure and never be afraid to dance.

A beautifully decorated abode is within reach for anyone. Just because you are on a tight budget should not deter from refreshing the abode with great redecorating ideas that can cost next to nothing. Have fun with the challenge of decorating the living room for less than $100.

A new floor plan using existing furnishings will instantly create a fresh decor.

Without spending a dime you can simply swap around the furniture to create an entire new appearance for an old room. Steal items from other rooms to use in the living room as new furnishing.

  • Play with new floor plan ideas on paper before you begin moving furniture around.
  • Open up a room by keeping the sofa but getting rid of a large chair or loveseat and swapping them for two lean chairs stolen from behind the dining table.
  • Try moving a console table from a wall to behind the sofa.Futoria Console

Paint is like a magic trick that will create a new decor with the flash of a brush.

Yes painting the entire room can get costly, but one can easily paint an accent wall in a trendy color to frame a sofa or dress the fireplace wall. With just a can of paint and creativity the living room can be dressed up in new fashion.

Add new excitement to the room with pattern.

Pattern can brighten a dull decor by adding new interest and excitement. Whether on the walls, or furnishings and accessories a pattern can cost effectively be a new welcome addition to freshening up the living room.flowers

  • Keep the wallpaper cost down by only applying it to one wall or use the ceiling as a fifth wall to make a unique statement.
  • The old sofa becomes a new piece of furnishing simply by adding new throw pillows in trendy patterns and colors.
  • Add a new area rug in a lively pattern to the seating area.
  • Change out a boring white lamp shade with a lovely patterned shade.
  • Turn an old piece of furniture into a designer piece of art by painting it in a fun pattern such as a plaid, argyle or floral.

Turn vintage finds into new designer furnishing.

Decor can be crafted from interesting discoveries. Sift through the attic and basement for item that have been forgotten and can be turned into new beautiful decor. Have fun visiting the yard sales and thrift shops, and even items tossed at the curb can be transformed into beautiful decor for way under budget.

Simply by redecorating the windows will add in new light and thrills to an old living room.

Heavy and expensive drapery does not equate to having a designer room. The windows are the eyes out to viewing the world so by keeping them simply decorated one can bring the beauty of the outdoors in to add to the decor.

  • Keep windows simple with plain blinds in a wood tone or white that can be purchased readymade for standard sized windows.
  • Dress the windows with store bought standard sheers flowing from the ceiling to the floor. For privacy add an inexpensive roller shade behind the lovely sheers.

Remember that for a true designer look furnishings should not match but instead blend together, so creating a beautiful room for under $100 can be fun, easy and creative. Dress up a room for a new trendy look with exciting accessories and color. Add flowers and plants to bring in a bit of natural color and scents.

Money does not buy beauty; create your own decorative splendor and never be afraid to dance!

Casement windows are the windows that swing out vertically to let the air in. As with any other type of window they come in an assortment of sizes for different rooms and applications. These windows are elegant with a single pane of glass and not chopped in half as a traditional double hung window is. The entire pane opens up to the outdoors creating a pleasant open feeling in the room.

The bedroom should be a room filled with décor to promote tranquility and comfort. It is the place that we can shut out the worries of the outside world. Parents seek peace by closing the door and instructing the family to give them some quiet if only for a few moments. The children’s bedrooms are where they can use their imagination to create an exciting world in which to read, play and study.

Be sure to watch me on the eHow video as an accompaniment to this article!

The bedroom’s décor should mirror the personalities of the people seeking a refuge of comfort.

The bed is the centerpiece of the bedroom. A headboard frames the head of the bed and becomes a major focus for the room’s decor. Instead of purchasing an ordinary headboard that is not unique to your personality create a surround for your pillows that will assist in taking you off to dream land.

Create a custom designer headboard easily by repurposing objects, using fabrics and pain.

  • Old wooden doors or shutters are perfect to repurpose and use behind the bed. Paint them and attach to wall or stand a few vertically on the floor to be used as a headboard.

No matter what size abode you may reside in, the bedroom is the sanctuary to escape away from the daily hustles and bustles of life. The bedroom should be a place to relax and to lock the day’s craziness outside. A large master suite may be your dream but a bungalow sized bedroom can just as easily turn into a special retreat space. The cozier bedroom necessitates the need to be inventive in order to gain the most out of your sleep space. Creativity is the key to decorating a bungalows bedroom.

Enjoy watching me on this eHow video for a tutorial to achieving your own beautiful petite bedroom!

The bedroom’s centerpiece is of course the bed but this is also the object that takes up a large chunk of a small space.

The cozier bedroom necessitates the need to be inventive in order to gain the most out of your sleep space. Creativity is the key to decorating a bungalows bedroom. In planning your bedroom’s new decor there are several options to obtain extra bedroom square footage.

  • Yes loft beds are for adults too. A loft bed is a wonderful solution if you have at least eight foot high ceilings. They create a second story to use as your “bedroom”, opening up an area for storage, desk or seating underneath.Elegant-Adult-Loft-Bed-Plan, thisarchitecture
  • The original Murphy bed is a pull down bed designed to fit into the décor upright and can easily be pulled down for a good night’s sleep. Pull down beds now have desks and sofas built into them so when they are stored upright the bedroom virtually turns into another room.queen with desk

Guest rooms allow for more sleeping options.

  • If the bedroom is to be an extra guest room, bungalow guest bedrooms are a good space to double as an office or den. A sofa bed or futon can serve double duty as seating and a bed for the occasional guest.

If you love the look of a traditional bed for your bungalow then play it up.

Small bedrooms will probably accommodate a bed no larger than squeezing in a queen size. Determine what the storage needs are as well as sleeping needs.

  • For a single, the twin bed can be placed against the wall between two bookcases creating a niche. Add pillows along the wall and there is a place to sit and read when not ready to get under the covers.

    houzz

    houzz

  • A cozy twosome can cuddle on a full size bed. This size bed can be placed against a wall into a corner of the room. Keep in mind that for two it mean that someone has to crawl in from the footboard end. Use a storage headboard that also allows for a shelf behind the bed to provide room for bed lamps and music players.
  • Royal couples need a queen size bed. These beds need room to walk around and will create a very cozy place to nest for couples. Although the standard is to have a couple of feet to get along the side of the bed, allowance can be made for small rooms. Add fluffy pillows to cuddle back on when watching TV or reading.

Keep the decor from being overly busy.

Paint the walls and ceiling in a uniformed look.

  • Most folks believe that they must use white walls to make a room appear larger. Medium shades will create a beautiful backdrop and will not cause one to feel closed in. Use a soft purple, blue, or green to promote a happy sleep. Stay away from bright colors and dark jewel colors. Paint all of the walls and ceiling in the same color so that the room is not chopped up. Trim and doors can be painted in a contrasting color to give the room dimension.IMG_1661

Stay away from heavy window decor.

  • Heavy drapery will close a small room in even more. Use roman shades or blinds for the windows. Shutters work well and create a special look for a bungalow bedroom.

Versatile furnishings and accessories are a must for the cozy bungalow bedroom.

  • Think double duty; storage cubes and benches are perfect as foot boards or in front of the twin bed acting as a settee. Bookcases are not just for books; The narrow shelves take up less room than a dresser. Use the shelves for folded sweaters and pants. Place baskets on the shelves that can discretely store more delicate items.

Loud artwork will keep you awake at night.

  • Keep the art on the bedroom wall personal. Hand happy photos of the family or a piece from a favorite artist. A framed mirror will create a more open feeling as well as help you get dressed.

Depending on the bungalow’s location, you might want to decorate in a theme.

If the home is on the beach then add some lovely accessories and scents to bring the seaside inside.

The country bungalow will be cozy in flannels and wools.

Have a great time viewing me as I discuss great decorating tips in all of my videos on eHow.

For the smaller space, closet organization is very important

Depending on your closet space, there are many options to choose from; hanging or over-the-door shoe racks, belt holders, and hanging shelves are all available.

Enjoy the peace that the bedroom gives to you. Relax in your own cozy oasis. Play your favorite tunes and never be afraid to dance!

Kitchen cabinetry that is old and out of date can bring the home’s decor down. Purchasing new furniture and appliances can add a bit of freshness to the decor but will not hide the old cabinetry. Cabinetry can be costly to remove and replace; not to mention the mess and down time of not having a kitchen to use.

Enjoy watching me discuss how to update your kitchen on this eHow video

Update the old boring white laminate kitchen.

White laminate cabinetry was popular twenty years ago but now is in need of updating for this century. Use a little elbow grease and imagination and the old cabinetry can be turned into a beautiful new kitchen.

Paint the white laminate.

Laminate can be painted. Preparation is key. Remove hardware and scrub the cabinetry clean. Then sand them well so that the paint will adhere. Make sure to prime the cabinets with an appropriate primer made to use on this material; this is also important for a smooth paint finish that will last. Finally paint the cabinetry turning them into new beautiful decor. A specialty paint supply store should be able to set you up with the necessary materials for the job.

New hardware.

Replace the old pulls and knobs with new attractive handles. This will instantly add newness to the old cabinetry in a quick and easy fashion. The new hardware placed on the newly painted cabinetry will be the icing on the cake for the decor.

Laminate counters can be painted too.

After you have completed transforming the cabinetry do the same with the countertops. Use Rust-Oleum Countertop Transformations™, to turn the existing countertops into a beautiful granite look without the high cost of stone.

Update with a new backsplash.

Add a new tile backsplash to finish off your new kitchen decor. Consider splurging on a few glass accent tiles to really add some special sparkle.

New appliances will complete the decor.

If it is in the budget then complete the new kitchen update by updating the appliances as well. Get good deals in clearance areas where the side of a refrigerator, that will be hidden anyway against your wall, may be scratched.

Do not be surprised by all of the compliments that you receive on your new spectacular kitchen. Little will everyone know that you were able to achieve the new decor without breaking the bank. Entertaining will be a pleasure preparing the affair in your new kitchen.

Take pleasure in updating the decor and never be afraid to dance!
